New To Streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week

Furious (Disney+, July 27)

Created by The Dropout and Dying for Sex’s Elizabeth Meriwether, this eight-part cat-and-mouse crime thriller may echo many other titles, yet “is unlike any other released this year.” Shameless’s Emmy Rossum is Alice Black, a NYPD homicide detective turned FBI agent who, as her personal life falls to pieces, tries to track down a cold and calculated female serial killer. A “tough watch, but a gratifying corrective to the Criminal Minds and Law & Orders of the world,” Furious is one of 2026’s must-see series.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (Disney+, July 29)

If you missed The Devil Wears Prada 2 in cinemas, now’s your chance to catch up with Miranda Priestly and Runway magazine. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci all return for this sequel to the 2006 film, which follows Andy Sachs (Hathaway) as she helps Priestly (Streep) navigate a PR crisis, the decline of print media, and the rise of AI. The Devil Wears Prada 2 doesn’t reinvent the sequel, but it’s still “good-natured, buoyant entertainment.”

Holy Days (Neon, August 2)

Based on the charming novel by Dame Joy Cowley, the unlikely road trip film Holy Days stars Elijah Tamati as Brian, a young boy grieving the loss of his mum. Set in 1970s Aotearoa, Brian finds comfort in a local convent run by Sister Agnes (Judy Davis), Sister Luke (Miriam Margolyes), and Sister Mary Clare (Jacki Weaver); three eccentric and rebellious nuns. But with developers planning to demolish the crumbling convent, the four set out on the road to save their beloved abbey. Reminiscent of Goodbye Pork Pie, this feel-good comedy is bound to warm the cockles of your heart.

Pretty Little Liars S1-S7 (ThreeNow, July 27)

Few TV shows have had as loyal a fanbase as Pretty Little Liars, the beloved mystery teen drama that spans 160 episodes across seven OMG-heavy seasons. Set in the fictional town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, the series follows high-schoolers Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Aria (Lucy Hale), who band together when the anonymous “A” begins harassing them after the disappearance of their best frenemy. If you need a guilty-pleasure binge, then Pretty Little Liars is the show for you.

Splitsville (Neon, August 2)

In the madcap adult romcom Splitsville, a “rare indie comedy in which style matters as much as substance,” Kyle Marvin and Adria Arjona are Carey and Ashley. When the aloof Ashley asks for a divorce during a fateful road trip, the good-natured Carey runs to his friends Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Michael Angelo Covino) who claim that their secret to happiness is an open marriage. Delivering “a confident commentary on the mess of modern sex and relationships,” Splitsville is sure to leave you in stitches.

Pick of the Flicks: Facing War (DocPlay, July 30)

After nine years as Secretary General of NATO, Norwegian politician Jens Stoltenberg had planned to step down. That was until Russia invaded Ukraine, and then US president Joe Biden persuaded him to stick around for another year. With unprecedented access to the candid Stoltenberg, the “gripping” Facing War “provides a fascinating insight into high-level diplomatic processes and a portrait of a capable and charismatic politician at work.” This peek into the inner sanctum of global power and politics is a thrilling and timely watch.
