Seven killed, 20 hurt as heavy rains lash Punjab

LAHORE: At least seven people, including two children, were killed and 20 others injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab during the last 24 hours, while downpour also damaged houses and killed livestock, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.

The PDMA report, available with Dawn, said 14 rain-related incidents were reported across the province up to 2pm on Saturday.

These included deaths caused by structural collapses and drowning, injuries from roof collapses and electrocution, the collapse of seven house roofs, and the death of five buffaloes.

In Lahore, three people, including a man, a woman and a child, died, while five others were injured in four separate roof-collapse incidents in Bobby Plaza, Garhi Shahu Railway Colony, Saggian Pind and Kahna.

Two people, including a man and a child, were killed and three others, including a woman and two children, were injured when the roof of a house collapsed near Adda Dhing Shah on Depalpur Road in Kasur.

A woman died after the roof of a house collapsed due to heavy rain in Faisalabad, while a child drowned in rainwater that had accumulated in fields near Pathan Colony in Gujranwala.

Three people, including a man and two children, were injured when the roof of a house collapsed, while another man suffered injuries after being electrocuted by an electric pole during the rain in Bahawalnagar.

In Narowal, two women were injured in a roof-collapse incident in Sair Bajwa village, while a woman was injured after the roof of her house collapsed in Sialkot’s Darma Wala neighbourhood.

In Nankana Sahib and Sheikhupura, three women sustained injuries in two separate roof-collapse incidents at Dera Mehboob Alam and near Peer Shah Khaki Diwan Darbar.

In Okara, two men were injured after an animal shed collapsed due to rain.

Addressing a press conference at the PDMA headquarters, Director General Umar Abbas said Punjab remained largely safe from flooding despite the ongoing monsoon spell, with water levels in all major rivers, including the Ravi and Sutlej, remaining within normal limits.

He said the heaviest rainfall during the current spell had been recorded in the Gujranwala and Rawalpindi divisions, particularly in Narowal, Jhelum and Gujrat districts.

He said a breach in the Dek Nullah near Narowal and another in an embankment in Sheikhupura had been plugged immediately, averting any major damage.

He said monsoon-related incidents had so far claimed 22 lives and left 183 people injured across Punjab.

He said any emergency could be reported through the Rescue 1122 helpline, adding that the authorities were also monitoring ageing electricity infrastructure to minimise power-related accidents during the rainy season.
