Segundo a PRF, é o maior resgate de imigrantes cubanos em uma única ocorrência já registrado pela corporação no estado. O grupo e os dois suspeitos detidos foram levados para a sede da Polícia Federal (PF) na capital. Entre os 39 resgatados estão adultos e crianças. As idades exatas de todos os passageiros ainda não foram confirmadas pela polícia. As investigações apontam que o grupo fazia uma rota internacional clandestina. O fluxo migratório saía de Cuba e passava por Georgetown e Lethem, cidades da Guiana que fazem fronteira com o Brasil. Parte do grupo tinha como destino a cidade de Curitiba (PR), e os demais planejavam ir para o Uruguai, segundo a PRF. Roraima funcionaria apenas como a porta de entrada. Para realizar todo o trajeto, os imigrantes relataram ter pago cerca de $2,8 mil (dólares) aos "coiotes", que são os criminosos que cobram para facilitar a travessia ilegal de fronteiras.
