Archeologen graven onder plein van de Notre-Dame bijna 2000 jaar terug in de tijd

Een munt uit de vierde eeuw, middeleeuws aardewerk en een steeds beter beeld van hoe Parijs in het verre verleden was. Archeologen hebben 4 meter onder het plein voor de Notre-Dame de tijd van hun leven. Na de brand in de wereldberoemde kathedraal Notre-Dame in 2019, de herbouw en de heropening eind 2024 is nu het hete en kale plein ervoor aan een ingrijpende opknapbeurt toe. De stad wil het vergroenen en schaduwrijk maken met bomen. Een dun laagje water moet straks over de stenen stromen om ze in de zomer te koelen. Met maatregelen als deze wil Parijs zich voorbereiden op steeds hetere zomers als gevolg van klimaatverandering. Maar voor het plein in 2028 klaar is, is het de beurt aan archeologen. Vrijwel meteen toen de eerste spade de grond inging, werden er ontdekkingen gedaan, inmiddels zitten ze op 4 meter diepte. Geschiedenis van Parijs Lucie Altenburg, conservator bij de archeologische dienst van Parijs noemt het tegenover persbureau AP een "zeldzame kans om de geschiedenis van Parijs tastbaar te maken". Onder de honderden al gevonden objecten zit ook een munt uit de vierde eeuw met het gezicht van keizer Constantijn erop. De munten kwamen naar boven als zwarte schijfjes, aangetast door roest. Maar met behulp van röntgenstraling werd het gezicht van de keizer zichtbaar die regeerde aan het begin van de vierde eeuw na Christus. Ook zijn er scherven van middeleeuws aardewerk gevonden, waarvan de binnenkant is beschilderd met tekens die nog door geen enkele expert zijn ontcijferd. Archeoloog Valentine Breloux maakte het aardewerk schoon en noemt de vondsten "verbazingwekkend". "Het laat de Notre-Dame weer tot leven komen", zegt een toerist uit Manchester. "Je komt voor de kathedraal en dan realiseer je je dat er nog een andere stad onder je voeten ligt." Het is zoals het met eeuwenoude steden gaat. Nieuwe generaties bouwen hun stad op die van hun voorouders. Hoe dieper de archeologen graven, hoe verder ze teruggaan in de tijd. Bij de bouw van de Notre-Dame stond het plein vol met middeleeuwse huizen. Eronder liggen graanputten uit de zesde tot tiende eeuw en daaronder een Romeinse wijk uit de vierde en vijfde eeuw. Complete kannen en bekers De mooiste vondsten komen van de smerigste plek, uit de diepe kuilen die in de middeleeuwen dienstdeden als vuilstortplaatsen. Daar vonden de onderzoekers complete kannen en bekers. "Het is zeldzaam om compleet keramisch materiaal te vinden", zegt Breloux tegen AP. Het breekbare keramiek werd beschermd door het zachte afval. Alle vondsten gaan naar een archeologisch centrum in het noorden van Parijs om verder te worden onderzocht. Parisii Het archeologenteam hoopt nog verder terug in de tijd te kunnen graven; voorbij de Romeinen naar de Galliërs. Want daar komt de naam Parijs vandaan. Een Keltisch-Gallische stam vestigde zich rond 300 voor Christus op de eilanden in de rivier de Seine en vernoemde de plek naar zichzelf: Parisii. "De hoop is dat we nog verder terug in de tijd kunnen gaan dan we ooit eerder zijn geweest", zegt conservator Altenburg.

We’re Nothing at All review – bus explosion sets off Hong Kong drama of grief, prejudice and queer identity

A disaster on Valentine’s Day sets off a sprawling tale of hidden lives and social fault lines in director Herman Yau’s ambitious ensemble drama Prolific Hong Kong film-maker Herman Yau is back with an ambitious, sprawling drama that is, at best, an awkward composite of his past works. We’re Nothing at All kicks off with a moment of rupture: on a seemingly ordinary Valentine’s Day in Hong Kong, a double-decker bus suddenly bursts into flames. The deadly explosion triggers a police inquiry led by Lung (Patrick Tam), a skilled forensics specialist whose investigation reveals a maze of intersecting lives. Much like the volatile opening, the rest of the film luxuriates in paradoxes, where the facade of normalcy is peeled back to reveal poverty, prejudice and despair. From inspecting the charred bodies of the victims – rendered in lurid closeup – to retracing CCTV footage, Lung’s gathering of clues is crosscut with flashbacks concerning those involved in the explosion. Among the dead are lovers Fai and Ike (played by pop stars Anson Kong and Ansonbean), gay men who have endured economic hardship and family rejection. With its golden hues, the warmth of their intimacy starkly contrasts with Lung’s world of colourless offices and sterile meetings. 거를 타선 없는 5월 걸그룹들의 '기세' [K-POP 리포트]

봄과 여름이 공존하는 5월. 계절의 여왕이라 불리는 이 성장과 풍요의 시기에 케이팝 걸그룹들이 약속이나 한 듯 풍요로운 성장형 음악을 발표했다. 중요한 건 이들이 모두 4, 5세대 팀이라는 것. 케이팝의 현재와 미래를 부분으로나마 가늠할 수 있으리란 얘기다. 그 옛날 이정현의 ‘와’를 닮은 ‘It’s Me’로 도파민 넘치게 컴백 한 아일릿의 4월을 지나 무지갯빛 5월을 함께 짊어질 걸그룹의 신작들을 한자리에서 들어보았다. 결론부터 말하자면 베이비몬스터, 엔믹스, 빌리, 에스파, 있지의 앨범·싱글은 하나같이 빼어나다. 거를 타선 없이 죄다 기세등등하다. 이미 차고 넘치는 시장처럼 보여도 이들 음악을 듣고 어떤 게 누구의 곡인지 금세 알아차릴 수 있다는 건 결국 이 집단 컴백이 오리지널리티 대결의 장이라는 이야기도 된다. 가령 ‘댄스’의 우리말을 앨범 제목으로 내건 베이비몬스터의 ‘춤 (CHOOM)’이 톤과 정확성에서 압도적인 아사의 랩 스킬을 앞세워 레이블(YG)의 색깔까지 담보한다면, JYP의 엔믹스는 곡을 정점으로 데려가는 릴리의 가창력을 강조하며 ‘Blue Valentine’의 성공이 가르쳐준 코러스 멜로디의 중요성을 거듭 새기는 모양새다. 레이블이 잘하는 걸 하는 이 분위기는 그대로 그룹들 개성 표출의 기회가 되면서 각자 다져온 팀 색깔을 더욱 살찌운다....
