Earlier today, in our forensic analysis of the SpaceX IPO, we said that according to BNP estimates, the company's inclusion into the S&P 500 some 6 months after the offering would unlock $13.4 billion worth of inflows. It turns out that that is not going to happen 6 months after the IPO. In fact, the earliest it may happen is 12 months after Friday's break for trading... and realistically well after that. That's because after the close today, S&P Dow Jones Indices said it would keep its existing eligibility requirements for main benchmarks…
GQG Partners has pared its holdings in two Adani Group companies through block deals worth about Rs 5,750 crore, with SBI Mutual Fund emerging as the buyer of the entire stake on Friday. According to NSE block deal data, GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund sold shares in Adani Enterprises and Adani Energy Solutions. The larger transaction involved 1.64 crore shares of Adani Enterprises sold at Rs 2,913.4 apiece, translating into a deal value of about Rs 4,789 crore. In a separate transaction, GQG sold 63.66 lakh shares of Adani Energy Solutions at Rs 1,504.8 per share, amounting to around Rs 958 crore.Together, the two transactions were valued at about Rs 5,747 crore. The shares were acquired by SBI Mutual Fund at the same prices through corresponding block deals. The stake sale comes after a strong run in Adani Group stocks over the past year, during which several group companies recovered sharply from the volatility that followed allegations made by US-based short seller Hindenburg Research in 2023.GQG had emerged as one of the earliest large institutional investors to back the Adani Group following that episode. Beginning in 2023, the fund manager invested billions of dollars across multiple Adani companies, helping restore investor confidence at a time when foreign institutional participation in the group had weakened.Since then, Adani companies have focused on deleveraging, strengthening cash flows and improving operational performance. Several group entities have reported healthy earnings growth, while execution across infrastructure, energy and transport businesses has remained strong. The latest transaction will be viewed by market participants largely as a portfolio rebalancing exercise rather than a change in the fund's broader investment thesis on the group.Adani Enterprises, the flagship incubator of the conglomerate, houses businesses spanning airports, roads, green hydrogen, data centres and mining services. Adani Energy Solutions is one of India's largest private-sector transmission companies and is expanding its presence in smart metering and distribution infrastructure.Shares of both Adani Enterprises and Adani Energy Solutions are likely to remain in focus as investors assess the implications of the stake sale and changes in institutional ownership.

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) on Thursday ruled that directions to the high courts for expeditious decisions in pending matters by superior courts should be issued sparingly and couched in appropriate words. The judgement comes against the backdrop of a recent petition by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) before the Supreme Court challenging its May 12, 2026 direction to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for deciding in two weeks the sentence suspension pleas of human rights lawyers Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha in the controversial social media posts case. The NCCIA had also requested the SC to recall and withdraw that order to help preserve the “sanctity and independence of the judiciary, maintaining equality among citizens and avoiding discrimination”. According to a three-page order by Justice Aamer Farooq, issued in deciding a dispute between the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) and Master Tiles and Ceramics Industries Ltd, it was held that high courts have their independent roster and case management schemes along with a policy for fixation of cases. It said that any order or direction, which superimposes case fixation, amounts to intrusion in the judicial and administrative independence of high court. The petitioner, Gepco, had challenged the July 10, 2025 order of the IHC before FCC, contending that the Attorney General Office was not competent to give consent on behalf of the petitioner in the proceedings before IHC, as the power company was an independent entity to be represented in the court of law by the counsel of its own choice. On the other hand, Master Tiles and Ceramics, the respondents, had argued that it was not their fault that the consent was given by the Attorney General Office; however, it submitted that if the FCC was inclined to remit the matter back to the IHC, an appropriate direction for expeditious disposal of the case should also be made. Justice Farooq, who headed the two-judge FCC bench along with Justice Syed Arshad Hussain Shah, however, set aside the IHC order with directions that the writ petitions filed by Master Tiles will be deemed to be pending before the IHC. It is expected that the case shall be taken up at the earliest, keeping in view the urgency involved in the matter, the FCC said. In the judgement, Justice Farooq held that the scheme of judicature as provided in the Constitution suggested that there were five independent high courts in the country created under the Constitution. “The high court, so created, is an independent constitutional court and is not subordinate to either the SC or FCC; however, in the scheme of arrangement, district judiciary and such other courts are subordinate to the respective high court as per Article 203 of the Constitution,” it said. All decisions of the high court are challengeable before the SC or the FCC, which does not make the referred court subordinate in any manner, he observed. Justice Farooq emphasised that adding any order or direction, which superimposes such policy or case fixation, amounts to intrusion in the judicial and administrative independence of such courts. Undoubtedly, at times, exigency or emergency of the lis demands that on remission, the matter be heard by the respective high court at an early date, but such observations must be couched in appropriate words and should not be in a way to affect independence of the high court, observed Justice Farooq. Even otherwise, generally directions issued are administrative in nature rather than judicial, where even a high court issues directions to the trial courts/subordinate courts, the same are administrative in nature and do not warrant any consequence but are recommendatory, asking the courts to take up the matter in priority keeping in view the urgent nature of the case/lis, Justice Farooq explained. Justice Farooq observed that the FCC agreed that the assistant attorney general, in the facts and circumstances, was not competent to give consent on behalf of the petitioner company regarding disposal of the writ petition pending before the IHC. The order stated that requests for the issuance of directions to the high courts for early disposal of cases were being made with considerable frequency, and such orders were passed by the superior courts issuing directions for early decisions.

• Nepra holds public hearing after CPPA asks for additional fuel cost adjustment due to Iran war disruptions • Regulator seeks report from K-Electric over ‘excessive loadshedding’ in Karachi ISLAMABAD: The price of electricity is likely to be increased by Rs1.74 per unit in next month’s bills due to the higher fuel cost adjustment, in light of an official demand for over Rs16 billion in additional recoveries from power consumers. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) held a public hearing on the Central Power Purchasing Agency’s (CPPA) request for an additional fuel cost recovery of Rs1.73 per unit from consumers for the June billing month. CPPA Chief Executive Officer Rehan Akhtar told the hearing that the reference fuel cost for April had been set at Rs8.25 per unit, but the actual cost turned out to be Rs9.975 per unit, mainly because of the US-Iran war and the resultant disruption in LNG supplies, thus necessitating an additional charge of Rs1.73 per unit on consumers in the billing month of June. Technical constraints in shifting cheaper power sources in Sindh to load centres in the upcountry regions facing shortages also contributed to the higher fuel cost adjustment (FCA). The net increase would be Rs1.74 per unit, as an existing minor negative fuel adjustment had also come to an end. The CPPA official said the government decided to undertake load management and limit the use of furnace oil and diesel for power generation, which helped contain the additional FCA at Rs1.73 per unit. He said special arrangements were made for LNG imports and the government decided to charge Rs2,000 per unit for its price instead of Rs3,500 per unit under normal circumstances to limit the tariff hike. In response to a question, he confirmed that lower availability of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit-2 (K-2) had also contributed to the higher FCA, while its past claims worth Rs3.4bn were another factor behind the increase. Another official explained that the K-2 plant was only partially available because of forced outages due to the problems in the nuclear reactor. The regulator was informed that power supply from the national grid to Karachi continued to benefit both K-Electric consumers and those connected to the national grid. “If KE had not been provided electricity from the national grid, an overall increase of Rs1.46 per unit in FCA and an increase of Rs2.80 per unit in capacity purchase price (CPP) would have resulted for consumers, with a total impact of Rs4.26 per unit for the month of April 2026,” Rehan reported. He said overall power consumption in April this year was 8.5pc lower than last year, as demand declined across all consumer categories except the industrial sector, where the impact of gas disconnections for captive power plants and the incremental tariff package contributed to a 13.5pc growth. Industrial consumers from Karachi, including Rehan Javed, Tanveer Barry and Arif Bilwani, complained that the incremental tariff package had benefited only a few consumers because of its “faulty design”. They called for the package to be reviewed. It was reported that consumption in the domestic sector dropped by almost 15pc, followed by declines of 9.5pc in the commercial sector, 7.2pc in general services, 53pc in agriculture and about 13pc among bulk consumers. Excessive loadshedding in Karachi During the hearing on Tuesday, Nepra also sought a detailed report from K-Electric over “excessive loadshedding” in Karachi amid scorching temperatures. Nepra pointed out that an increasing number of complaints were being received about excessive loadshedding in Karachi. A senior Nepra official reported that these complaints were coming from both high-loss and low-loss areas, which was a matter of concern as loadshedding schedules were not being followed. Moreover, power cuts caused by technical faults were also not being accounted for by the power utility under load management schedules, which was against regulatory performance standards. The K-Electric management, available live online, was asked to provide a detailed report on an urgent basis so the matter could be examined. KE promised to submit its report at the earliest but did not immediately respond to the allegations. In a statement issued after the hearing, a KE spokesperson said that its loadshedding practices were aligned with the principles of the National Electricity Policy 2021, and blamed development work in the city by civic authorities for any localised faults that were reported. Technology minister Sun Dong on Sunday said the government was in talks with mainland authorities to arrange a real-time chat between Hong Kong students and Shenzhou-23 astronauts in space, including the city's first-ever payload specialist Lai Ka-ying. The government also hopes the astronauts can visit the SAR after their return, he said, adding the trip could take place in the first half of next year at the earliest. Speaking on a TVB programme, Sun said Lai’s selection to the mission was inspiring to Hong Kong people. “I think Ka-ying’s selection has given Hong Kong a very good start,” he said. “Her appointment has been praised by everyone – besides her professional background, she is also a mother of three and is friendly ... people feel that she is just an ordinary person like us, and I think this is inspiring for many people.” Sun added that Lai was selected because of her outstanding academic ability, exceptional physical condition and mental toughness, as well as her hardworking attitude. The Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry hopes Hong Kong can nurture more astronauts in the future with the development of the aerospace industry. “We need to begin cultivating a group of outstanding young scientists who are passionate about aerospace and willing to strive for its advancement,” Sun said. “We must accelerate the construction of our international innovation and technology hub, so that the country can gain a better understanding and confidence in Hong Kong’s innovation and technology capabilities.” Sun went on to say that Hong Kong would allocate resources precisely to facilitate national space missions. The SAR could also help the country in international exchanges and collaboration, he added. Edited by Tony Sabine
• No time frame given for restoring normal supply • Residents say water shortages always worsen during important events and religious festivals in Karachi KARACHI: Already struggling with a worsening water shortage during the three days of Eid, residents of the metropolis faced another uncertainty on Saturday after an emergency power shutdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station disrupted the water supply to several parts of the city. This has been the second month of an acute water crisis in Karachi that has left taps dry, created long queues for water bowsers and frayed tempers. The fresh crisis was announced by Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) in a statement on Saturday evening with the most alarming aspect being the utility was unable to provide any time frame for restoring the normal water supply leaving residents uncertain about how long the disruption would continue. According to the KWSC statement, K-Electric informed the utility that a major fault had developed in Transformer No. 1 at the Dhabeji Grid Station, necessitating an emergency shutdown at 6:30pm. “As a result of the power outage, 10 out of 21 pumping units at the Dhabeji Pumping Station were forced to shut down, significantly affecting the city’s water transmission system and disrupting water supply to various parts of Karachi,” it said. “The K-Electric had initially indicated that the shutdown would last for approximately one hour. However, no definitive timeline for the complete restoration of power has yet been provided. The KWSC is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant contact with K-Electric officials to ensure the earliest possible restoration of electricity and the resumption of normal water supply operations.” The KWSC, it added, has urged residents to use water judiciously during the disruption and assured citizens that updates will be provided as more information becomes available regarding the restoration process. At the recently passed Eid, many Karachiites spent the festive days struggling to secure water for their households. The city has now entered the second month of a severe water crisis that has affected large parts of the metropolis, leaving thousands of families dependent on water tankers and private suppliers. For many residents, obtaining water has become a daily challenge. Long queues for tankers, dry taps and rising water costs have added to the difficulties faced by households already burdened by skyrocketing inflation. Residents say the situation is particularly frustrating because it is not the first time Karachi has faced a water crisis during a major religious occasion. Many complain that water shortages frequently worsen during Eid holidays, Ramazan, Muharram and other important events when demand for water increases significantly. The ongoing crisis began in late March and persisted due to a combination of factors, including major pipeline leaks, bursts in transmission lines, power outages at pumping stations and technical faults affecting the city’s water supply system. As a result, normal water distribution has remained disrupted in many areas for weeks. There was no immediate response from K-Electric to the fresh claims made by the KWSC. However, with no timeline yet available for the restoration of normal water supply, it appears that the people of Karachi may have to endure further hardship in the days ahead. “We have been facing a severe water shortage since late February,” said Shafiq Ahmed, resident of Liaquatabad. “There are days when not a single drop comes through the taps, forcing us to buy expensive water tankers that many families can hardly afford. Every time we hear that the supply system has developed another fault, we wonder how much longer we will have to live like this.” Published in Dawn, May 31st, 2026
