Israël heeft in het geheim troepen en inlichtingenteams naar Azerbeidzjan gestuurd tijdens de oorlog met Iran. Dat bericht de Amerikaanse nieuwszender CNN op basis van gesprekken met vier anonieme bronnen. De troepen opereerden volgens deze bronnen vanuit meerdere plekken in het zuiden van Azerbeidzjan, vlak bij de grens met Iran. Speciale commando-eenheden zouden vanuit die plekken inlichtingenmissies en drone-operaties hebben uitgevoerd, waardoor Israël Iran kon observeren. De troepen waren in eerste instantie gestuurd als potentiële reddingsteams, maar hun mandaat zou zijn uitgebreid tot een militaire en inlichtingenoperatie. Volgens een van de bronnen waren enkele tientallen manschappen betrokken, waaronder speciale eenheden, helikopterteams en personeel van de Israëlische geheime dienst Mossad.
