Centre Party leader on Sweden's next prime minister: 'Kristersson has disqualified himself'

The Centre Party will not support Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson as Prime Minister as long as he intends to allow the Sweden Democrats into government after the September election. This was stated by the Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist at a press conference, Tuesday. "Therefore, Magdalena Andersson (Social Democrats) is the most likely cooperation partner", the Centre Party leader says.

Government wants to be able to seize property owned by suspected spies

The government wants the state to have the power to compulsory purchase properties and plots of land if it suspects that the ownership could pose a security risk to Sweden. With a worsening security situation facing Sweden, the Moderate-led government says it sees risks of properties being used for sabotage, spying or used in other ways that threaten Sweden's security. A government appointed review will look into the legalities of the proposal, Defence Minister Pål Jonson said in a press release.

Brit in Sweden still hopeful on receiving citizenship before deadline day

With the clock running down towards midnight and the introduction of the new, stricter requirements for Swedish citizenship on June 6th, without transition rules for those currently waiting for a decision, Brit David Hollingsworth is still keeping his fingers crossed his application will be processed in time. Applying for Swedish citizenship three years ago, David Hollingsworth appeared in person at the Migration Agency office in Stockholm last week after getting an email to say it was the last leg of his application process. Radio Sweden spoke to him today, Friday, to find out the latest on his citizenship application.

Report: Foreign-born pensioners receive thousands of kronor less every month

The difference in pension between those born abroad and those born in Sweden has increased significantly in recent decades, according to a new report by insurance provider Folksam. For people born in 1957 abroad, the difference amounts to almost SEK 5,700 in their pension as a whole per month before tax compared to those born in Sweden. For people born in 1937, the corresponding difference was only SEK 650 per month. New customs fee will make that cheap purchase from outside the EU more expensive

From July 1st a new customs fee will be introduced for products ordered from outside the European Union, which could significantly rack up the cost of your small purchase. For packages worth less than 150 euros a fee of three euros per product will be added, according to Swedish Customs. The new EU rules, which are to be applied across the union, are supposed to stop products that don't meet the EU's safety requirements, and to create healthier competition for companies inside the EU.

Migration Minister Johan Forssell told a press conference on Monday it was a good, reasonable and fair proposal that would last a long time. Man accused of kidnappings in Assad's Syria worked at Swedish preschool

A man accused of kidnappings and extortion in Bashar al-Assad's Syria has been working in childcare at a Swedish preschool, according to Swedish Radio's investigative programme Kaliber. He is one of 15 men loyal to the former Syrian dictator who live in Sweden today, that Kaliber has been able to identify with the help of Swedish police files, images on social media as well as witnesses on the ground in Syria. Human rights lawyer Basima Jabry says Sweden must investigate, prosecute or expel such men to protect the public. The man denies the allegations.

Long-term unemployment remains high in Sweden

Unemployment has fallen since last summer, but the number of long-term unemployed people in Sweden remains high. The Public Employment Service has been criticised for not doing enough to help people get a job, or to offer training for professions where there are jobs available. The agency's director general, Maria Hemström Hemmingsson, says that they have relied too much on digital channels in the past. Now they will prioritise to meet in person with people who are, or who risk becoming, long-term unemployed.

Party support for increasing voter turnout cut to nearly half

While voter turnout among foreign-born Swedes is declining, political parties are getting less money to reach this group as well as others with low participation in elections. Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand tells Radio Sweden that parties will have to make do with the funding they get. Meanwhile a number of opposition parties are critical: "It's unfortunate," says the Left Party's party secretary Maria Forsberg.

Ukraine to buy 20 JAS Gripen fighter jets from Sweden

Ukraine is to buy 20 of the latest models of JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in Uppsala today. Once the initial purchase is complete, Sweden will also donate 16 of its older generation of JAS Gripens to Ukraine in early 2027. It's the first step in a larger Gripen deal, in which Ukraine will buy up to 150 of the JAS 39 Gripen E/F combat aircraft, President Zelensky told a press conference.

Voting gap widens: Foreign-born Swedes vote significantly less than native-born

People born outside of Sweden vote less today than they did 30-40 years ago. In 1982, voter turnout was roughly the same whether one was born in Sweden or overseas. But in the 2022 parliamentary election nearly 90 percent of native-born Swedes cast their vote, versus only around 65 percent among foreign-born voters. Henrik Andersson, an Associate Professor of Economics at Uppsala University, who has studied this voting gap phenomenon, tells Radio Sweden about why this is and its consequences.

More Swedes need treatment for obesity — treatment available

The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare says in a new report that more people with obesity need to be assessed and receive treatment from the healthcare system. More and more people in Sweden are being diagnosed, but healthcare still reaches too few, despite there being effective treatment methods. Swedish Food Agency's new caffeine guidelines for youth

The Swedish Food Agency is today issuing new youth guidelines for caffeine consumption, which set the limit at 70mg per day. That's around half a cup of regular coffee, while energy drinks — popular among young people — can pack between 80-200mg in one can. According to the Swedish Food Agency, having just one can of energy drink can lead to symptoms like heart palpitations, tremors, nausea, dizziness, anxiety and difficulty sleeping.

Sweden now considered a 'smoke-free' country

Sweden has reached its goal of having less than 5% of the population smoke on a regular basis — which now means it's considered to be a "smoke-free" country. At the beginning of the 1980s, more than 30% of Swedes smoked every day. Sweden had set a goal of being smoke-free by 2025 and that's now been attained, according to the Swedish Council for Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs.
